These days, getting online is a necessity if you want to do just about anything. To do that, you are going to need to make sure that you have a good Internet service provider. When you are choosing your ISP, there are several choices of service that you can pick from.

1. DSL

DSL is generally provided by a phone company. The service will come in through your phone line. You can plug a modem into the phone line which will let you get online. If you still have a landline, you will need to make sure that you have some kind of splitter so that one phone line will go to your phone while the other line will go to your modem so that you can get online at the same time as you are on the phone. You can use Wifi with DSL, but you might notice that it isn't quite as fast as other options that you are looking at. Part of that is because phone lines can't carry the same amount of data at the same speed as other options.

2. Cable

A lot of people are choosing to use a cable company as an Internet service provider. There are a lot of reasons for this. One is that they tend to be much faster and more stable than DSL. The cable lines can carry more information with less signal degradation. That means that you are going to get a stronger more stable signal. The cable comes into your house and into a router. If you still use cable for television, then there you may need to have a splitter if the cable input is in the same room as your television.

Generally, you should have no problems with using cable outlets in other rooms to connect to your televisions so that you can watch TV. The router should have the choice to let you plug a device directly into the router or to let you use Wifi. You may also be able to get your landline service through the cable company, and if so, then the router will also have a place to plug your phone in. Some cable companies will let you provide your own router, as long as it is on their compatibility list.

If you are trying to figure out what kind of Internet service you want to use so that you can get online, it's good to know what your options are. For more information, contact your preferred high-speed internet provider.
